What To Eat: Beignets

Beignet (English: /bɛnˈjeɪ/; French: [bɛɲɛ], ben-YAY literally bump)

Crispy, crunchy, doughy beignets are essentially square French -style doughnuts, lavishly covered with powdered sugar.

This New Orleans's signature pastry was first introduced to the city by the French immigrants who made up the city’s first European settlers. Each light, puffy treat is a fried fritter of yeasted dough, dusted with powdered sugar and best eaten fresh, with a cup of a coffee to wash it down (much like its stolid cousin, the old-fashioned doughnut). Served in orders of three, beignets were declared the official state doughnut of Louisiana in 1986!!

Where To Eat Beignets?

Our favorite place is the Café du Monde, a hugely popular New Orleans food destination specializing in beignets with powdered sugar, coffee with chicory and cafe au lait. Cafe du Monde has been said to be "the culinary Eiffel Tower of the French Quarter".
